Fusiform Aneurysm of the Basilar Artery Associated with Internal Carotid Artery Agenesis: case report

Resumo

Agenesia de artéria carótida interna (ACI) é rara e representa a ausência completa da ACI concomitante à inexistência do canal carotídeo. Os pacientes geralmente são assintomáticos, podendo apresentar cefaleia, convulsões ou déficits neurológicos. Dois possíveis mecanismos envolvem a associação entre agenesia de ACI e aneurismas intracranianos: sobrecarga hemodinâmica e hiperfluxo por demanda de determinado território. Descrevemos um caso de agenesia de artéria carótida interna esquerda associada a aneurisma fusiforme e fenestração da artéria basilar.

Abstract

Internal carotid artery (ICA) agenesis is rare and represents a complete absence of ICA concomitant with the absence of the carotid canal. Patients are usually asymptomatic and may present with headache, seizures or neurological deficits. Two possible mechanisms involve the association between ICA agenesis and intracranial aneurysms: hemodynamic overload and hyperflow by demand of a given territory. a case of agenesis of the left internal carotid artery associated with fusiform aneurysm and fenestration of the basilar artery is described.
